Thanks to our affiliation with the Arizona Health Sciences Center, our patients benefit from some of the most advanced and comprehensive medical services available in the Southwest. The Breast Imaging Center’s board certified radiologists are not only physician faculty members of the College of Medicine, but also fellowship-trained experts in breast imaging and image-guided procedures. We also provide other services in our Women's Health section.

It’s an unsettling statistic: 1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point in her life.

A screening mammogram can detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. Digital mammography with computer-aided detection is utilized for all screening mammograms performed at our center. Digital mammography is an x-ray of the breast which uses extremely safe, low radiation levels and can detect breast cancer long before it may be felt.  When additional imaging is necessary, our center offers specialized mammogram views and state-of-the-art breast ultrasound. These diagnostic examinations are overseen by our breast imaging experts, who are available to discuss results and any further recommendations with patient at the time of their appointment. We work closely with our affiliate outpatient imaging center located nearby, University Medical Imaging, to facilitate the scheduling of a breast MRI when indicated, and all breast MRIs are interpreted by our center's radiologists.

Patient comfort is extremely important at the Breast Imaging Center, which is why we’re proudly certified as a Softer Mammogram Provider. For each mammogram performed, we use a specially designed foam cushion called the MammoPad®, which is attached to the compression plate to provide a warmer and more comfortable mammogram for our patients. Clinical studies show that a more relaxed patient experience combined with the grip-like effect of the pad allow for more tissue to be imaged, resulting in more comprehensive imaging results.

Breast Imaging Center Mission Statement

The mission of the Breast Imaging Center is to provide a comprehensive and compassionate approach to a variety of breast-related concerns of women and men in our community. Our caring and efficient staff, including specialty-trained physicians and technologists, is committed to optimizing the early detection of breast cancer and effectively managing all breast-related problems according to the highest possible standards. We do this while fostering a team approach with our referring providers and constantly striving to provide a comfortable and informative experience for our patients.

Breast Procedures

When needed, a core needle breast biopsy can be performed at our center with either mammography or ultrasound guidance. Breast biopsy can also be performed using MRI guidance at our affiliate site, University of Arizona Breast Imaging Center.

Our doctors are highly trained and experienced in breast biopsy, as well as other specialized procedures such as cyst aspiration, ductography, skin punch biopsy and image-guided wire localization of areas that need to be surgically removed. This means that procedures are performed skillfully and accurately, providing the most reliable results and best outcomes.

In addition, the UA Breast Imaging Center is pleased to announce the availability of cryoablation for the minimally invasive treatment of breast fibroadenomas. Traditionally, open excisional biopsy (i.e. surgery) has been the only option. But now, a minimally invasive option is available that can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.
